Pastry’s Corner: Astro Doughnuts Sweet Potato Doughnut

Astro sweet potatoAstro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken in northwest DC has quite the unique business, satisfying two needs of any red-blooded American: doughnuts & fried chicken, preparing both on-site each day.  It may sound like a weird pairing but trust me; it’s a good thing.

As you’d expect, being a doughnut aficionado, I follow the shop on Facebook to keep up with their extensive menu that changes pretty regularly.  Sure, they have “everyday” offerings (vanilla glazed, maple bacon, pb&j, & crème brûlée) but they also have a rotating menu of 4-6 other doughnuts for each day of the week.  In addition, as the seasons change, so do the seasonal doughnuts.

So long story short, one morning while perusing the latest menu update, something intriguing caught my eye: Sweet. Potato. Doughnut.  Now I’m a fan of the sweet potato, I like them fried or baked, but as a doughnut?  My mind was spinning like a top!

As I am want to do, I summoned the Pastry Dan I-Team, and planned a trip to Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken to investigate.  When I pulled the doughnut out of the bag, the aroma of cinnamon wafted out with it and I couldn’t wait to dig in.

The doughnut itself is a cake doughnut, but it’s baked, not fried. In fact, it kind of reminds me of a bundt cake.  The cake was super moist and the flavor fantastic.  Now, if I was blindfolded I couldn’t honestly tell you that it was a sweet potato doughnut but that doesn’t matter because what it lacks in sweet potato flavor it makes up for by bursting with those fall spices that we all love so much.

Astro’s Sweet Potato Doughnut is topped with a cinnamon brown sugar icing, which alone would easily make this a winner any day of the week, and dried cranberries.  I’ve been known to enjoy cranberries in the right cookie from time to time, but I never thought about it as a doughnut topping.  The cranberry’s tartness provides a nice offset to the sweet cinnamon sugar icing.  Moist, cinnamony, sweet, and tart, what more could you want?

Next time you find yourself in downtown DC, be sure to swing by Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken and get pick up a doughnut (or a dozen).  The sweet potato doughnut is only on the menu on Thursdays, but they have a good selection of doughnuts every day of the week.

I’ve heard nothing but great things about this establishment. The fact that it’s a locally-grown business (co-founded by former Capital Jeff Halpern) that’s ALSO worthy of its buzz is outstanding.
