Ah the fall, is there a better time of year? There are leaves on the ground, a chill in the air, and it’s the return of two of my favorite things, football and pumpkins. Since this isn’t a sports blog and pastries are my business, clearly a discussion about pumpkin pastry treats is best for business.
While there are lots of great pumpkin treats out now (breads, pies, cookies, muffins), the king of pumpkin season for me will always be the donut. Dunkin’ Donuts is no stranger to the pumpkin donut game, having made a cake donut in the fall for many years. This year, DD stepped up their game with the introduction of the pumpkin pie donut.
So what’s this donut all about? Let’s look at the press release:
“Dunkin’ Donuts’ newest donut features a pumpkin pie-flavored, buttercreme-filled yeast shell, frosted with white dipping icing and sprinkled with graham cracker topping.”
Many thoughts crossed my mind when I read that paragraph, many not fit to publish on this website, the overriding theme was, “I have to have it.” I raced to my local Dunkin’ Donuts, turned over a K-cup display, and declared my intentions. To eat ALL the donuts.
Pumpkin Cake Donut:
This is their classic, their original, and if you’ve ever stopped by Dunkin’ in the fall I’m sure you’ve had one of these (and if you haven’t, what are you doing with your life?). The pumpkin flavor isn’t overpowering but when combined with the cinnamon and spice, along with glaze on top, it doesn’t get much better. The cake was moist with good texture and the amount of glaze was just right.
To go along with the full-sized donuts they also have pumpkin Munchkins. So even if you’re some kind of communist who can’t demolish a dozen of these donuts in one sitting, you can still enjoy these pumpkin treats.
Pumpkin Pie Donut:
While I’ve had many a pumpkin cake donut, I’m always down for something exciting and new. Being a big fan of jelly and cream filled donuts, pumpkin pie flavored filling sounds amazing, and who doesn’t like pumpkin pie?
The buttercreme filling has a nice pumpkiny flavor, along with plenty of cinnamon and nutmeg. On top of that, the white icing mimics a dollop of whipped cream that you’d toss on a slice of pie. Finally, the graham cracker toping adds a great crunch that really bring home the pumpkin pie experience.
With these two selections, Dunkin’ has two great seasonal donuts in their arsenal and since they are only around for a limited time, get out there and get some! While you’re there I also highly recommend the pumpkin latte to round out your pumpkin Dunkin’ day.
